Madhu Kambikar Dies Days After Nana Patekar, Played His Mother In Hum Dono And Yeshwant

Marathi actor Madhu Kambikar, who played Nana Patekar's mother in Hum Dono (1995) and Yeshwant (1997), died in Pune on October 12 at the age of 73, just four days after the veteran actor's death.

Madhu Kambikar had been battling a prolonged illness and suffered multiple health complications following a paralytic stroke. She was widely known for her contribution to Marathi cinema, theatre, television and folk arts, particularly her distinctive Lavani performances.

Interestingly, Madhu Kambikar was two years younger than Nana Patekar, despite playing his mother in the two films.

Odisha's Kalinga ghat closed for 19 days, livelihoods crippled

The closure of the Kalinga ghat stretch on National Highway-157 for nearly 19 days following a landslide continues to paralyse connectivity, trade and essential healthcare access between Ganjam and Kandhamal districts.

The arterial route is crucial for livelihood, education, healthcare, and trade and commerce between the two districts. However, the prolonged disruption has left roadside centres deserted. With hardly any vehicle passing through the ghat, business in local shops has dropped sharply, leaving traders worried about their livelihoods.

The disruption has also affected passenger bus services, hotels, auto-rickshaw operators and taxi drivers. Several buses have stopped operating on the route, depriving transport-dependent businesses of regular customers.

Patients requiring urgent medical attention are among the worst affected. With the main route closed, people travelling to Berhampur are forced to take lengthy detours, increasing travel time and compounding hardship during medical emergencies.

With Dussehra approaching, traders fear further losses during the festive season. They recalled that the road was disrupted for about 42 days last year, severely affecting business during the festival.

Kandhamal collector Ved Bhushan said light vehicles, including two-wheelers, auto-rickshaws and cars, could pass through the ghat within 10 to 15 days after the ongoing repair work is completed.

Meanwhile, residents and traders demanded an alternative road bypassing Kalinga ghat, citing its vulnerability to landslides and flash floods during prolonged spells of heavy rain.

They urged the administration to expedite restoration work and develop a permanent alternative route to ensure reliable connectivity between the two districts. They said uninterrupted road connectivity was essential for local businesses and movement of patients, students, workers and essential goods.

On September 24, heavy rains had washed away a portion of the NH-157 on the Kalinga ghat stretch near Andharikot where a guard wall was being constructed in view of the recurring landslides at the spot.

Why Vijay’s temple visit with Narendra Modi goes beyond routine protocol

On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay stood beside each other at a Metro station in western Chennai, waved green flags and then boarded the train together. It was the first run on the first operational stretch of Chennai Metro Rail’s Phase II, a project six years in the making.

But the journey also completed a striking political weekend for Vijay. On Saturday, he hosted Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi for lunch at his Neelankarai home. Twenty-four hours later, he was receiving Modi at the airport, travelling with him on the Metro, visiting a temple with him and sharing a public stage.

For a Chief Minister heading a government in alliance with the Congress, it was an unusual sequence, made more conspicuous by the turmoil in Delhi following Gandhi’s detention and Vijay’s decision not to publicly condemn it.

Modi’s Tamil Nadu trip

Modi landed in Chennai around 11.10 am. Vijay, who had left his Neelankarai residence around 10.30 am, received him at the airport with a shawl, bouquet and handshake. AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami was also present.As Modi’s convoy travelled towards Porur, BJP workers lined sections of the route and the Prime Minister waved from his vehicle. Vijay’s convoy followed. By 11.50 am, the two were at Porur Bypass station, where officials briefed them on the Rs 4,900-crore Poonamallee-Vadapalani section.

Two killed in bus-bike collision in Cuttack

Two persons were killed after their motorcycle collided with a private bus on Cuttack-Chandbali road near Nandolagada under Salepur police limits on Saturday.

The deceased were identified as 26-year-old Paresh Chandra Rout of Mahakalpada in Kendrapara and Kirtik Raj (19) of Nayapalli in Bhubaneswar. The bus driver is reportedly on the run.

Police said the duo was going to Bhubaneswar from Kendrapara when the incident occurred. Both Rout and Raj were thrown off their bike in the impact of the collision. Locals rescued the duo in a critical condition and rushed them to Salepur community health centre (CHC) where doctors declared them dead.

After the incident, the bus driver fled the spot leaving the vehicle and passengers behind. On being informed, police reached the site and launched an investigation. “The bus has been seized and efforts are on to nab the driver who is absconding,” said Salepur SDPO Biranchi Narayan Pati.
